After returning to Asgard, the Allfather decided that Loki needed to learn humility and appreciation for the world the prince had sought to destroy. Unlike Thor, his crime was much greater, so aside from banishing his powers, he also transformed Loki into one of the smallest of creatures, one that should be dependent on mankind. He banished Loki back to the mortal world so he may learn the errors of his misguided thoughts.

Thus, Loki the black cat was born.

Knowing that his youngest son have a great penchant for mischief, the Allfather, in his wisdom, set the curse to allow Loki to transform from his small cat form into a panther if his life is truly in danger. Loki neither knows nor controls this, and as soon as the danger is removed, or he is removed from danger, his cursed form will reassert itself.
